Course Description
This course offers an in-depth study of human anatomy and its artistic representation, emphasizing both simplified and detailed approaches. Students will explore the human skull and cranial structure through simplified techniques and three-view studies. They will integrate muscular and skeletal systems into cohesive representations and focus on individual facial features such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, using replicas and plaster models. Progressing to general studies of plaster heads, students will work with both replicas and live models to develop a comprehensive understanding of the human face and head.
The curriculum extends to portraiture, focusing on detailed observational studies. It includes an analysis of the neck and shoulder connection, as well as the study of how clothing fits and moves on the human body. A detailed examination of specific body parts—hands, wrists, feet, legs, torso, and pelvis—will provide a deeper understanding of their bone and muscular structures. The course also includes studies of the human skeleton from life, emphasizing the dynamics of movement and the ergonomics of clothing on a moving body. Students will apply their anatomical knowledge in compositional work, incorporating objects such as musical instruments, furniture, fabrics, and clothing. Experimentation with various materials will allow for creative exploration in both compositional and non-compositional contexts. The course concludes with two-figure compositions and the development of original creative projects.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will have developed a profound understanding of human anatomy and its artistic depiction. They will acquire advanced skills in representing the human form, with a focus on precision and detail in studies of the skull, facial features, and body structures. Students will refine their ability to create portraits and explore the dynamic relationships between clothing, movement, and the human form. They will learn to analyze and represent the human figure in both static and motion-based contexts, enhancing their observational and technical abilities.
Additionally, students will strengthen their compositional skills by integrating multiple elements into harmonious arrangements, experimenting with diverse materials and techniques to foster innovation. The course will encourage creative problem-solving and the development of original artistic projects, equipping students with the ability to synthesize technical knowledge and creative vision. By mastering these concepts, students will confidently apply anatomical precision to produce expressive and impactful works in a variety of artistic endeavors.
